Experience and Values

For over 15 years, Bryan Kennedy has been serving his community - nine years on the Glendale River Hills School Board and seven years as Mayor of Glendale.

Our next State Representative needs to be someone with the experience to build coalitions and get legislation passed in Madison.

Who is bryan kennedy?

Mayor, School Board Member, Union Leader

Bryan Kennedy has the experience we need in Madison:

  • He has served for the last 7 years as Mayor.
  • Prior to becoming Mayor, Bryan was elected to three terms on the Glendale-River Hills School Board.
  • Bryan has been a member of the American Federation of Teachers for more than 20 years. He has served as state president of AFT-Wisconsin, in addition to being president and treasurer in his union local, AFT Local 3535.
  • Kennedy holds a Ph.D. in Latin American Studies (research on economic development in Brazil) from the University of North Carolina and has taught on the faculty of both UWM and MSOE.
  • Bryan has been engaged in Democratic Party politics for more than three decades. He worked for a Democratic Congressman on Capitol Hill, managed various campaigns for Democratic candidates in Wisconsin, and was the party's nominee for US Congress in 2004 and 2006 in the 5th Congressional District.
  • Bryan and his wife Heather have lived in Glendale for more than 20 years.  Their three children all attended public schools.

Proven Track Record

  1. Brought $175 million in new investment to Glendale. When businesses pay more in taxes, residents pay less.
  2. Adopted a Green agenda for Glendale. City buildings consume nearly 50% less energy than four years ago. Green stormwater infrastructure now traps 100% of rainfall on city campus.
  3. Built a city park on the site of a former landfill, reclaiming contaminated land for a positive public improvement.
  4. Appointed diverse candidates to city committees, boards and commissions to ensure that the committees look like the city they serve.
  5. Supported diverse candidates for Common Council. Glendale has its first Black woman and first openly gay alderpersons.
  6. On the school board, led the effort to close the achievement gap by implementing policies and curricula that made Glendale schools some of the best in the state for children of color.

Bryan Will Get Things Done

  • A sitting mayor brings a unique perspective to state government. The state legislature regularly passes bills that negatively impact local government. We need someone who can stand up and speak about how legislation affects local government.
  • Bryan can work across the aisle to get bills introduced, passed and signed into law. As a local elected official, Bryan has been endorsed repeatedly by prominent Democrats and Republicans in his community.
  • Wisconsin needs a 21st Century Energy Agenda that invests in alternatives to fossil fuels. We are not a coal or oil state. There is no excuse for a manufacturing state like Wisconsin to not be building alternatives (like wind turbines, for example) here in Wisconsin.
  • Every child deserves a great education in a safe school. Bryan will fight for our public schools to have the resources that they need. He will also demand that schools teach a curriculum that prepares our children for a diverse world and to be critical thinkers.
